Gabourey Sidibe obviously has been having a remarkable year professionally, and she's happy her mother is on a similar path now.
Still a relative newcomer to showbiz, the Oscar-nominated star of "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" is cheering for her mom -- singer Alice Tan Ridley -- who's competing on the NBC contest "America's Got Talent" Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
"I'm really happy for her," Sidibe tells Zap2it. "She's been singing since she was a child, so I'm excited for her to get to do it on this scale, finally."
Ridley made a huge impact on "Talent" with her knockout rendition of the Etta James standard "At Last," but her vocal gifts have long been apparent to frequenters of the New York subway system, where she performs often. Wherever Ridley has gotten to do her thing over the years, Sidibe says, "I'm just proud of her."
Next to be seen as a teen-with-'tude opposite Laura Linney's cancer-patient character in the seriocomic Showtime series "The Big C" starting Monday, Aug. 16, Sidibe recalls the first time she saw "Precious" with her mother ... who was her date on Oscar night.
"She thought it was the best movie in the world," says the younger woman, "but she's also my mom. The first time I saw it with her was the second time she had seen it, and she laughed inappropriately. A lot! That was pretty funny, because I also laugh inappropriately, all the time.
"I guess the scene that gets the most reaction is the staircase scene, and when people gasp all at once at that, it's hilarious to me. I laugh really loud at that, and I guess my mom does as well because it's me."
