"Pretty Little Liars" is one of the hottest shows on TV this summer. Star Troian Bellisario, who plays smartie Spencer Hastings, dishes on the comparisons between "Liars" and "Gossip Girl" and also how addictive the book series is for her.
"I think on 'Gossip Girl' they do a really great job of showing how hard ti is to keep your friends around and be true to who you are, especially in a world like that," Troian tells Zap2it. "But for the girls in Rosewood, it's a little more smalltown Americana."
"However, we're dealing with all of the universal issues of growing up," she continues. "Figuring out who you are and what you want to be in the world and does that mesh with what your parents want you to be and how do you stay true to yourself."
So has she read the books, like her co-star Shay Mitchell?
"They're quite addicting. I actually had to put them down because I was finding it was really, really distracting to get so far ahead of what I was playing on show," laughs Troian. "It's also really hard because they know so many things that I don't know. But I've just given in and now I'm reading the last few."
How does she think the show stacks up against the books?
"They're very true, especially to Sara Shepard's idea of where she wants to go with the characters and what she wants to unfold. The writers on 'Pretty Little Liars' have been very true to her image of Rosewood."
