Monday is moving day for The Secret Life of the American Teenager's Amy Juergens, who heads to New York for a music camp — and the move comes at just the right time.
Amy's on-again, off-again boyfriend, Ben (Kenny Baumann), has gotten their friend, Adrian (Francia Raisa), pregnant following a one-night stand. Amy (Shailene Woodley) doesn't know that yet, but she is about to find out.
"Ben actually tells her. It's a shock, so she doesn't talk to Ben for a while," Woodley tells TVGuide.com. "I can't imagine being in love with someone and him telling me that he got someone else pregnant! That would be heartbreaking! ... I was shocked when I read it, but it's realistic because there's not only one pregnant teen in schools. It definitely helps Amy to be away from the whole situation and not have to deal with it all the time. New York is a good little detour for her."
Though Amy was initially hesitant about going to the camp and thus leaving behind her 1-year-old son, John, Woodley suspects her character was excited deep down that her kooky counselor (Mayim Bialik) hastily arranged her spot in the program and gave her short notice. Easing the guilt is the fact that the camp is one for teen moms.
"She's excited to see the possibilities for herself. I don't think she felt rushed into it," Woodley says. "I think it's really inspirational. It's hard for a teen mom to juggle a baby and her own goals. So, [the camp] is kind of a really cool thing for other teen moms who are watching the show to see. Their dreams don't have to be crushed, and they can find a babysitter for their baby while they go and pursue something that makes them happy."
While the camp is only four weeks long, Amy's trek out East will play out in six or seven episodes, during which the teen "grows up a lot" and will come home "more sophisticated," Woodley says.
She's not the only one who will change during that time: John's father, Ricky (Daren Kagasoff), will move in with the Juergens (awkward!) to help raise his son. "It's an interesting time for them both. Amy's matured more because she has had that time to herself. Ricky's matured and becomes a really responsible dad," Woodley says. "I think it's a really great opening to show how much he does love John and how he doesn't need Amy to be around to be a great dad. And he gets closer to [her sister] Ashley."
Does that mean more dysfunctional love triangles are on the horizon?
"Well, there's some fire between Ashley and Ricky," Woodley says. "But a little spoiler: [Amy] thinks about engaging in a relationship with a guy while in New York, but it's a guy from back home. The audience doesn't really know if something happens, but it's definitely a relationship that gets rekindled."
