HOLLYWOOD — Now that the 2009-2010 TV season is over and rerun, you'd think the stars of the hottest shows would be looking forward to some well-deserved r & r before heading back to the studio.
Many are planning to take full advantage of the summer hiatus, but others see it as an opportunity to keep a toe in the big screen arena by sneaking in a movie or two.
Take House regular Olivia Wilde.
For her break away from her role as Remy (Thirteen) Hadley, Wilde looks to be in for a truly wild time, hanging out with Daniel Craig (subbing for Robert Downey Jr.), Harrison Ford and Sam Rockwell in the latest Jon Favreau feature, Cowboys & Aliens.
Based on a graphic novel of the same name, the movie concerns an extraterrestrial landing in mid-1800s Arizona which forces the Apaches and western settlers to put aside their differences and join forces to protect all mankind from alien enslavement.
And Thirteen thought Gregory House was a handful!
Speaking of the good doctor, Hugh Laurie is taking on a juicy role in The Oranges, a comedy about a guy who falls for the daughter of a family friend.
Laurie is said guy and Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester is said daughter, while Catherine Keener, Allison Janney, Adam Brody and Oliver Platt round out the killer cast.
Before Meester returns to her Blair Waldorf character, she'll also be in Monte Carlo, a romantic comedy in which she, Selena Gomez and Melrose Place's Katie Cassidy are three young women vacationing together in Europe.
Playing the potential love interest will be Calgary-born Glee co-star Cory Monteith, while Nicole Kidman will be involved off-camera, wearing a producer's hat.
Prior to scrubbing in for the seventh season of Grey's Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey's got some movie work lined up, playing the part of Mikaela Banes' boss in Transformers 3.
As you might have heard, Megan Fox, who had played Banes in the previous two instalments, was not invited back, with her character reassigned to British Victoria's Secret model, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.
McDreamy will be taking on a larger role in Flypaper, a crime caper comedy penned by the writers of The Hangover.
Seeing as he doesn't have any awards-hosting duties in the offing, Neil Patrick Harris is using his time off from How I Met Your Mother to take a live-action role in The Smurfs movie, with the part of his pregnant wife being played by Glee guidance counsellor Jayma Mays.
And, although, one would assume after eight seasons and 192 episodes of 24, Kiefer Sutherland would want some quality down-time, that doesn't seem to be the case.
Next month the glutton for punishment will be heading for Sweden to star in a film directed by enfant terrible auteur Lars von Trier, whose previous actor-challenging (some would say "demeaning") output includes Dogville and Antichrist.
Not a lot is known about Melancholia, other than it's apparently a sci-fi drama involving the end of the world, and co-starring Kirsten Dunst and Charlottes Rampling and Gainsbourg.
No offence to Jack Bauer, but, when it comes to saving the planet, we think we'll be lining up behind James Bond and Indiana Jones in Cowboys & Aliens.
