During more than two decades as a globe-trotting correspondent for CNN, Christiane Amanpour was often asked why she rarely smiles on camera. "Well, that's because you often see me covering genocide, civil war and things like that," she would answer. Don't expect her demeanor to change much when she takes the anchor chair at ABC's political roundtable program This Week on Sunday (August 1, 9am/8c). "Maybe viewers will see a more relaxed version of me," she says. "But I'm really serious. I'm not very good at yukking it up. I have such respect for people's right to know and for journalism."
The Iranian-born Brit will offer a different kind of brew for the Sunday-morning audience, which is used to seeing Beltway insiders hold forth. She wants to use her international background to give viewers a better insight on what's going on at home. "America is irrevocably intertwined with the rest of the world," she says. "There is a solid link now between domestic and foreign policy. So many people tell me they want to know more about how it all works and affects them. This is an opportunity to broaden that conversation and bring more perspective."
Other aspects of This Week will remain, including the roundtable discussion that includes conservative columnist George Will and the somber video tribute to those who have left this mortal coil in the previous seven days. But don't be surprised if Amanpour takes the show out of the confines of the Newseum in Washington, D.C., to a global hot spot. "I love the road," she says. "It's my 100 percent comfort zone. It's where I connect with people."
