There's a chance Conan O'Brien could return to NBC's airwaves—albeit very briefly. The Television Academy of Arts and Sciences has reached out to O'Brien about appearing as a presenter on the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, which airs August 29 on NBC. O'Brien, whose Tonight Show is among the nominees for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series, departed from NBC in February after seven months as Tonight Show host (with a $30 million-plus payout of his contract).
The offer to appear on the Emmys came just after NBC Entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour Friday morning that he had "no issue" with having O'Brien on the awards broadcast despite the bitter breakup. According to O'Brien's longtime executive producer Jeff Ross, O'Brien hasn't decided whether to attend the Emmys as a presenter or a nominee. He has just started work on his new late night show that premieres in November on TBS.
