Newly installed ABC Entertainment president Paul Lee didn't want to talk about the sudden departure of his predecessor, Steve McPherson, amid allegations of sexual harassment. "Well, I've just been on vacation," he said, dodging the first of many reporters' questions about McPherson.
(Cheeky ABC publicists offered their own silent commentary by installing a giant stuffed elephant — as in the elephant in the room — at the podium.)
After just 36 hours on the job, Lee, the former president of ABC Family, didn't have a lot to say in the way of programming news either. "I apologize in advance if I don't have all the answers," Lee, an unfailingly polite Brit, said.
Lee declined to specify any strategy for the network, but emphasized that he was looking for brand-defining shows. "I've just spent my last six years trying to channel not just my inner American, as a Brit, but also my inner female teen," Lee said. "I think you really need to do a lot of research to understand your audience."
His only definitive statement: "Modern Family should win the best comedy series at the Emmys this year," he said.
