Heavy metal music hasn't been the currency of cool in high school for a long time, unless we're missing something.
But despite that conceit in the opening episode, the new Canadian series Todd & the Book of Pure Evil -- which debuts Wednesday on Space -- mainly has the feel of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with potty-mouth.
We were big fans of Buffy, so that part is a good thing. The language at times is distractingly salty -- perhaps deemed necessary in a transparent effort to lure a teen audience -- but we're trying to look past it.
The series follows a book of devilish power that fulfills the wishes of teenagers at Crowley High, but always at a cost. After Todd Smith -- played by Alex House -- has a flirtation with the book himself, he winds up standing between the other vulnerable students and infinite chaos.
Shot in Winnipeg, Todd & the Book of Pure Evil also stars Maggie Castle as Todd's dream-girl Jenny Kolinsky, Bill Turnbull as Todd's best friend Curtis Weaver, Melanie Leishman as head-over-heels Todd-lover Hannah Williams, Chris Leavins as guidance counsellor Atticus Murphy and Jason Mewes as Jimmy the janitor.
Todd & the Book of Pure Evil generally is good fun, if not quite good clean fun.
