The premiere of CBS' "Hawaii Five-0" had all kinds of great action, but since it was a pilot, it also had a lot bigger budget than future episodes will.
What's going to carry the series week to week is the chemistry between the cast, and at least based on this one episode things are looking pretty good. Alex O'Loughlin and Scott Caan have what seems to be a really nice buddy-cop vibe going.
"So far it's great," Caan told Zap2it when we visited the set a couple weeks ago. "You've got to keep working on it, because if you don't, it goes away. You have to keep thinking of new and interesting things. We can't riff off the same stuff episode after episode after episode.
"The writers have a tough job," he adds. "I always have the utmost respect for people who write series, because they've got to come up with new stuff all the time. ... Otherwise it would just be a straight procedural, which this show is not."
For his part, O'Loughlin says he and Caan "got on really well straight away," so much of what you saw in Monday's (Sept. 20) premiere was natural -- and possibly even a little metaphysical.
"We just clicked," O'Loughlin says. "We were born only a couple hours apart -- did you know that?" (Caan was born Aug. 23, 1976 and O'Loughlin the following day). "We're almost exactly the same age. I don't know if that's got anything to do with it."
Whatever it is, it makes "Five-0" more fun. What did you think of the premiere?
