Jenny McCarthy is known for making her life an open book.
True to form, in her newest work, Love, Lust and Faking It: The Naked Truth About Sex, Lies and True Romance, the actress offers her candid, no-holds-barred take on love and sex. But there is one topic that's off-limits in the book: her five-year relationship with Jim Carrey.
"I just have to respect his privacy," she tells PEOPLE. "There were broken hearts on both sides."
Still, she reveals that she learned a lot from the romance. "What I got out of that relationship was a lot about self-love," she says. "It's about being happy."
Catching many people by surprise, McCarthy elected to announce the split on Twitter earlier this year. "You can either end in war or peace. I chose peace," she says. "And people respected it because it was authentic. It was just a thank you."
Now casually dating former fitness model Jason Toohey, 35, the actress is balancing her time between work – she's planning to host a new syndicated talk show for Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Studios next year – and play.
"I'm really working right now in this moment to fill myself up as much as possible with love in my life," she says. "Me being the No. 1 lead actor in it."
