"The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret" is a new IFC original mini-series created by and starring "Arrested Development's" David Cross as an office temp and liar named Todd Margaret. Margaret bluffs his way into a senior sales position heading up the London office for the new energy drink called Thunder Muscle
"He's just one of those guys who floats through life, very little ambition, can't really stick to anything," Cross tells Zap2it. "Probably the kind of guy who will spend way more energy getting out of a job than actually doing that job. Every five or six months or so, he comes across a great idea that is going to make him a million dollars and save him time, and after starting this project, maybe three days later he stops. He's that kind of guy."
In the London office, Margaret's assistant Dave (Blake Harrison) only helps to fuel the antics.
"He loves to mess with him, he loves to wind Todd up," says Harrison. "He likes to encourage all the crazy, harebrained ideas that Todd has and watch how they play out, watch as they fail spectacularly."
We said that he sounds a bit like the Jim to Margaret's Michael Scott and Harrison agreed that it wasn't a bad comparision, but that there isn't quite the same level of affection between Dave and Todd.
"There is some affection, deep down. Deep, deep down. But he has too much fun winding him up to let that get in the way," Harrison laughs.
Another person Margaret encounters in London is Alice, played by British actress Sharon Horgan. Alice is the "uninterested love interest."
"She's not a love interest ... Todd thinks she's a love interest, let's put it that way. But whether she actually is ... Todd hasn't had great luck with the ladies," says Cross.
The mini-series will air in six half-hour episodes and we wondered if that would complete the story of Todd Margaret.
"I have more stories planned out. It's not like 'Lost,' I know exactly where it's going to go, so I'd like to have more opportunities to tell them," Cross says. "I could do it in two more [six-part series], but I'd really like to have four."
"The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret" premieres Friday (Oct. 1) at 10 p.m. ET on IFC. Encores will be shown Tuesdays at 11 p.m. ET.
