"The Walking Dead" walked away with 5.3 million strong in its debut on Halloween Sunday (Oct. 31).
The original AMC series scored an enviable 3.6 million viewers in the coveted 18-49 adult demo, the highest of any cable series premiere for the 2010 season. Drawing more than 5.3 million viewers (and a 3.7 rating in households), it's the largest audience for the network for an original series ever.
"It's a good day to be dead. We are so proud of this series, its depth of storytelling and the remarkable talent attached," says AMC president Charlie Collier. "As the network dedicated to bringing viewers the best stories on television, we are so pleased to have the opportunity with 'The Walking Dead' to raise the bar within this popular genre and continue our commitment to being the home of premium television on basic cable."
Over its three domestic airings (at 10 and 11:30 p.m. and then at 1 a.m.), "Dead" drew 8.1 million viewers and a 6.0 household rating.
2.1 million viewers in the adults 18-34 demo tuned in, while 3.1 million in the adults 25-54 watched.
The "Dead" also walked globally, launching with Fox Internationl Channels worldwide.
"The Walking Dead" is based on Robert Kirkman's comic book series and centers on sheriff's deputy Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) who, with a band of survivors, try to eke out an existence after a zombie apocalypse.
