Elvis Presley was the pivotal figure in the merging of rhythm-and-blues and country music, the result being rock 'n' roll.
But notably, since it took so long for rock 'n' roll to be accepted as a valid art form by the snooty established music community of the 1950s and early 1960s, Elvis won only three Grammy Awards in his lifetime, all of them for gospel music.
The role that faith played for Presley, as well as the near religious adulation he received from fans, is the focus of the three-part documentary The Church of Elvis. It airs on three consecutive nights - Monday, Jan. 10, Tuesday, Jan. 11 and Wednesday, Jan. 12 - on VisionTV.
Guiding the doc is Elvis tribute artist Ron Moore, who travels to his hero's old haunts and talks to many of the people who knew Elvis, as well as those who continue to be inspired by him today.
Part one is titled Let There Be Elvis (1935-1953); part two is Spreading the Gospel (1954-1966); and part three is Roots of a New Religion (1967-present).
