Red carpet report: Elton John's Oscar viewing party
The bash: 19th annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Viewing Party
The venue: Pacific Design Center, West Hollywood
The stars: Elton John and partner David Furnish, Florence + The Machine (performer), Heidi Klum, Seal, Sharon Stone, Jamie Foxx, Idris Elba, Kelly Osbourne, Sharon Osbourne, Kim Kardashian, Taye Diggs, Garcelle Beauvais, Tori Spelling, Holly Robinson Peete, Rodney Peete, Hayden Panettiere, Steven Tyler, Nicole Richie, Joel Madden, Rashida Jones, Kyle MacLachlan, Chris Colfer, Smokey Robinson, fashion designer David Meister, Sir Ben Kingsley, Zac Levi, Matthew Morrison, Paul Rudd, Claire Danes & Hugh Dancy, Ashley Tisdale, Baz Luhrmann, Emma Stone, Quincy Jones, Chace Crawford, Cee Lo Green, Jane Lynch, Miranda Cosgrove, Serena Williams, Joel McHale, Rashida Jones, Vanessa Hudgens, Niecy Nash, Rufus Wainwright and Natasha Henstridge.
Hot host: John and his partner Furnish made the rounds at the sit-down dinner for 780 guests, shaking everyone's hands and thanking them for coming. When he addressed the crowd, he said, "I never thought I'd have the number one movie (Gnomeo & Juliet) coming to an Oscar party.
Mutual admiration: Michael Stipe, a return guest at the bash, said, "I really love how this Foundation keeps alive the idea that AIDS is not something that has gone away." Stipe, a fan of Modern Family, didn't miss an opportunity to introduce himself to Stonestreet. "In line for the bathroom, what else are you going to do?" Stipe said. After Stipe walked away, Stonestreet said, "I lost Michael Stipe. Where did he go? I'm going to go find him. I want to go get a picture with him. I'm a big fan of his."
Making friends:Tyler couldn't get enough of the Godiva bar. After eating the chocolate lava cake truffles, he returned five more times and brought Sharon Osbourne over to taste. Asked if he had met anyone interesting at the party, Tyler looked at a leggy blonde in a mini-dress eyeing him and said, "Her probably in two seconds." Sure enough the woman approached him, asked to take a photo with him and introduced herself as Karen.
Party rounds: Panettiere, in a Luca Luca Grecian-style gown, let out a cry of joy when Natalie Portman won best actress. Speaking about her controversial starring role in Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy, Panettiere said, "People have very mixed opinions about whether it should have been done or shouldn't have been done. I was ecstatic with the film and the review. I'm very happy." The Elton John party was her first stop of the evening. "I'm going to go to the Madonna-Demi Moore party," she said. She's promoting her upcoming movie, Scream 4, today and said, "Hopefully it won't be too late. It's been a late night every day since Wednesday."
Sense of humor: Foxx and Stone spent an inordinate of time latched on to one another. Foxx recently teased President Obama about his dancing skills, or lack thereof, during a Motown celebration at the White House. "I sort of winked at President Obama and Vice President Biden that I would be doing some type of humor," Foxx said. "I think it was great that President Obama and Vice President Biden went along with the jokes. It allowed everybody to have a great time. As they go, so the room goes so we had a great time."
