Move over, Giggy. Andy Cohen has a new four-legged friend and he's even cooler than a Real Housewives' house pet. Bravo's veep of original programming and diehard Snoopy fan is set to fete the canine icon at an event being held Thursday at the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, CA. Sponsored by Hallmark, Inc. and sure to be a doggone good time, the VIP night will include a screening of a brand-new "Charlie Brown" straight-to- DVD production and a Cohen-hosted discussion afterward. So of course, we just had to chat up the king of Watch What Happens Live about his lifelong Peanuts pal and how Snoopy may actually leave a permanent impression on him.
TV Guide Magazine: So how long have you and Snoopy been BFFS?
Cohen: Oh, I have been Snoopy's best friend in my head forever. In fact, when I was little, I had this stuffed Snoopy and my dad would take him and act like he was whispering things about me into his ears and I believed he could hear him. [Laughs]
TV Guide Magazine: And now it's for real!
Cohen: I know! What happened was, I did a video-blog that was a tour of my office and in it, I opened my closet and there was this huge bag full of Snoopys—I always keep a surplus of Snoopys so when people I have babies, I can send them one. So I had this bag and joked "oh my god, they're suffocating!" Then I opened the bag and hugged them, I was like "it's ok, you can breathe again." Somehow, Jean Schulz, who is Charles Schulz's widow, saw this video and discovered that I was this huge fan, so they invited me to host this event at the Schulz Museum. I am so excited! And by the way, I don't have time to do this, but its one of those things that you clear your schedule for. If you are summoned to Snoopy HQ, you go!
TV Guide Magazine: What exactly will you be doing?
Cohen: I'm hosting the premiere of this new Snoopy movie called Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown and then doing a q&a with the creative team and Jean Schulz.
TV Guide Magazine: What is your earliest memory of Snoopy on TV?
Cohen: I think its probably Great Pumpkin. I think the reason Peanuts resonates so much is that there is a melancholia associated with them that is really fascinating. If you watch the specials as an adult, there's a joy and a sadness and a nostalgia. I think Snoopy is a layered experience depending on where you come at it from.
TV Guide Magazine: You and I are both such superfans. I even have a Snoopy tattoo.
Cohen: No way! That's so funny because I now feel like, if I ever did get a tattoo, that's probably what I would get. A Snoopy. I've never thought in a million years of anything I would want tattooed on me, but that might be it.
TV Guide Magazine: Any other characters you related to?
Cohen: You know, I loved Woodstock. And I was always interested in the ancillary characters like Sherman and Pig-Pen...the ones who didn't appear that much. [Laughs]
TV Guide Magazine: Will we see any of this on Watch What Happens Live?
Cohen: I would love to get a Snoopy on the set of my show, but I think they have to give me the rights to put it up there.
TV Guide Magazine: Well, this might be a good time to ask.
Cohen: You're right. I am going straight to the source! [Laughs]
