By this time, the Idol Meter has clearly identified the three most vulnerable contestants. If you average the Meter scores of each singer to date, the bottom three are Paul (9), Stefano (44) and Haley (46). (Leaders are Jacob, Scotty, Lauren and James; the Meter apparently thinks Pia sings too many ballads.) Here are some survival tips for the endangered trio, heading into tonight's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performance:
HOW THEY RANKED
Haley Reinhart: The confused one
Even with a good score last week, Haley's season average of 26 ranks lowest. Contestants who rely on seducing the voters seldom last long — ultimately, Idol likes 'em wholesome. And Haley's stylistic jumble (Is she country? Bluesy? A lounge singer?) doesn't help. She should pick a path, stick to it, and tone down the growling and purring in favor of actual singing.
Paul has averaged 30 out of 100 so far. He's not going to triumph on sheer lung power, so he needs to stress his strengths: a unique and heartwarming light, raspy voice; sensitivity and charm; and the unusual-for-Idol taste that led him to pick a Ryan Adams song. He should also cling to his guitar; if nothing else, it prevents him from dancing. (Or is that staggering?)
Stefano Langone: The cipher
Stefano (season average: 28) seems like a nice guy. He also appears to be a perfect blank. So it's imperative that he build on his improved audience connection last week, keep his eyes wide open and — most important — choose distinctive material on which he can stamp his own style. Otherwise, he's nothing more than a pale male version of Pia, and that won't fly.
