Dan Whitney, better known as Larry the Cable Guy, has found that filming Only in America can be a heavy proposition.
The star of the History Channel program, and the voice behind the hero tow truck of the upcoming Cars 2 has put on 35 pounds since filming for the television show started.
"I was on the road 300 days of the year filming the show," he says. "Some days I'd go all day without eating and I'd get back into the hotel room and do nothing but eat."
Before he began filming, Larry had been pretty good about trimming down his famously lumbering frame. He went on the Nutrisystem weight-loss plan and it was "awesome," he says.
He had reached his "desirable goal" after losing 50 pounds on the program (he remains coy on what that is, saying only that he wanted to be a "B-cup"). But with the show, the pounds came back on.
His Cars 2 character Mater takes on an increased role since the first film. Despite the comparisons between the happy-go-lucky Southern goofball in the film and the real-life person who voices him, Larry would have chosen a different model for himself.
"If I was going to be a vehicle in real life," he says with a laugh, "with all the stomach problems I've had, I'd probably be a dump truck."
