"The Voice" semi-finals aired Tuesday night, and the competition is definitely heating up. Every single contestant brought their A-game this week, and Christina Aguilera's contestants, Beverly McClellan and Frenchie Davis, were no exception to the rule.
Frenchie performed first, singing Madonna's classic "Like a Virgin." At first, she expressed some trepidation about singing the pop song. She said she was "taken aback and a little intimidated," but that she trusted Aguilera implicitly.
"I want her to take this song to a place it's never been before," Aguilera said, "and that's the churchy, soulful approach."
The performance drew an extremely strong reaction from Cee-Lo -- so strong, in fact, that they had to cut away from him, and Adam Levine reminded him that they were on live television. Blake Shelton said that Frenchie's performance proved Aguilera's expertise. "That performance right there is a giant middle finger to anybody who ever thought that [saving Frenchie] was the wrong decision," he said.
Aguilera's other contestant was rocker Beverly McClellan, who turned down the volume a bit for B.B. King's "The Thrill Is Gone." We're so used to hearing Beverly rock out that it was nice to hear a different side to her voice -- which was clearly Aguilera's intention.
"Honestly, you are one of the reasons that I am so thankful I signed on to do this show," Aguilera said after Beverly's performance. "We know that you can really belt your way through and you're such a powerhouse, but I knew that there was this bluesy soulful side to you that could really break it down."
