{alltv} 'Beavis and Butt-head': Mike Judge on why the time is right, plus the return of 'Daria'?

As we noted in our post about the first look at "Beavis and Butt-head's" return to MTV, the two title characters haven't changed much since their early-'90s debut. But that's how creator Mike Judge wants it.

"I didn't want to do a big, conscious forcing all this modern stuff on them," Judge said Friday (July 29) at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. The revived show, which returns in the fall, will make note of how much the Internet and other technology has exploded in the past 15 years, but you probably won't see Beavis tweeting from the couch.

"Only when it's funny," Judge says as to how immersed in the present-day culture Beavis and Butt-head will be. "There's an episode where they work tech support that came out pretty good, I think. ... There's an episode where they see 'Twilight,' and all these girls are into vampires and think vampires are sexy, so they try to become undead. Stuff like that that's a little bit topical -- but I wanted to make it not too forced."

As for why he wanted to do the show again, Judge says, "I just kind of like doing it." He said he and MTV Networks boss Van Toffler had talked about doing a second "Beavis and Butt-head" movie, and he would occasionally jot down ideas for the characters.

"I started thinking I had a couple of pretty good characters there, and I should do it while I still can," Judge says. "I think it still works. It feels like it does to me."

The return of "Beavis and Butt-head" prompted a reporter to ask Toffler if that means a new version of "Daria" might not be on its way as well. The answer is no, for now -- but maybe not forever.

"'Daria' still airs on MTV2 and Logo, and it's done quite well on both," Toffler says. "We've talked to the creators [about a revival]. So there's not as long a shot as you'd think that 'Daria' will be back on one of our channels."
