As the second-last season of Entourage ended last year, Vince was being a bleep.
While interviewing Adrian Grenier, the actor who plays Vince on Entourage, we didn't actually say bleep. But the word we used was unfit for publication, so we'll stick with bleep for now.
"What is it about him that's being a bleep?" Grenier asked us, turning the tables on the interview. "I'm just curious how you see it."
Well, Vince's drug use and fling with a porn star had turned him into a liar and a bully, we explained. It was the first time in the long-running series that Vince was not being essentially a nice guy.
"That's fair," Grenier agreed. "I guess I have more empathy. I feel sorry for Vince, like, 'He's struggling, poor thing.' "
As the eighth and final season of Entourage kicks off Sunday, July 24 on HBO Canada, Vince has been some place for 90 days. We'll leave it to you to figure out what that means.
Grenier admitted it has been a bizarre experience having his fame rise through his work on a TV show about fame.
"If I were on a show about jockeys -- I'm too tall to be a jockey, OK, horse trainers -- and I happened to become famous because of it, they would be somewhat separate," Grenier said. "But because I'm on a show about celebrities, it becomes the topic. I've been dealing with issues and ideas of fame for eight years."
Entourage focuses on Hollywood movie-star Vince and his inner circle of buddies from his New York upbringing, which includes his brother Drama (Kevin Dillon), Eric (Kevin Connolly) and Turtle (Jerry Ferrara). A West Coast addition is Vince's agent Ari (Jeremy Piven).
When Entourage debuted in 2004, it loosely was based on the experiences of co-executive producer Mark Wahlberg. It's interesting that while a show like Tina Fey's 30 Rock has received criticism for being "too insider-ish," Entourage seemingly has skirted the charge.
"I don't get that argument (that a show can be too insider-ish)," Grenier said. "Everything is going to be inside to something. So what do you make shows about?
"Entourage is not just about insider information, it's about the human stories and conflicts. And then at the same time, you get to indulge in all the things that make us stimulated."
An Entourage movie is in the works, but Grenier knows his role as Vince slowly is coming to an end. It's one of the reasons Grenier made the documentary film Teenage Paparazzo last year.
"I'm looking to develop my other skills and (Teenage Paparazzo) was job security," Grenier said. "I never want to be in a position where I'm looking for a job or waiting for a part. If I never get another role, if people just can't see me as anything but Vince, then I make films.
"Things couldn't have gone better. I'm thankful for the opportunity to be on Entourage. I like the show. I think it's funny. I'm a fan myself. And it has allowed me a lot of opportunity. So it has been a fully realized experience for me."
