A struggling actor who allegedly broke into the Broadway studio where David Letterman presents his late night show has apologized to the TV host for the incident.
Jimmy Whittemore, 22, is accused of breaking and entering New York's fabled Ed Sullivan Theater, where the Beatles made their historic U.S. TV debut, early on Sunday.
He was arrested later that day and arraigned in court on Monday morning. Whittemore, who claims to have been drunk at the time of the alleged incident, is facing charges of burglary in the third degree and criminal mischief in the second degree.
Whittemore has now addressed the drama, telling the New York Daily News he's "ashamed" of the incident which is said to have caused an estimated $5,000 worth of damage to the venue.
He adds, "I just want to apologize to the theater people. I just wanted to go out and do karaoke. I wanted to have fun. I never meant for this to happen.
"Next thing I remember is laying down on the floor, surrounded by cops. I looked around and saw the destruction. I could not believe it. I was shocked. I don't remember any of it. I woke up and saw the destruction around me. Who else could have done it? Me."
Whittemore, who is due back in court on Friday, admits his appearance before authorities on Monday was a wake-up call: "When they said what I did in court, I almost cried. I told my lawyer I was guilty. I'm taking responsibility. If they need help fixing the theater, I could do it. I just feel bad."
