It's Prime Suspect, back in prime time.
Twenty years after the original British series Prime Suspect made a star out of Helen Mirren as detective Jane Tennison, NBC is unveiling a remake built around Maria Bello as New York detective Jane Timoney. Those are some big shoes to fill, which may explain why Bello would rather we not think of her as filling the same shoes.
"I'd seen (the original) some years ago and remembered it a bit," says Bello. "But when I read the script, it was such a different show, because of the humor, and it was modernized and it was set in New York City. So I haven't gone back to watch it."
If she does watch it, she'll notice at least one big difference between the new Jane and the old: The new one wears a fedora. All the time. Not all critics were fans of the hat, but Bello loves it. "It felt right to me. I felt like this is who Jane is."
Unlike the original, which stretched one case out over a short season, the NBC version will be a weekly procedural. NBC wants a show viewers can drop in and out of, and you can't do that when the story continues week to week.
The pilot plays the sexist squad room "he-man women haters' club" aspect of the story even more heavily than the original did 20 years earlier. That will change, says producer Alexandra Cunningham. "Some of the characters will react in a traditionally sexist way, and some will not like her for the kind of person she is. … We're going to explore it that way and try to make it more realistic."
