The Carrie Diaries, the young adult novel prequel to Candace Bushnell's Sex and the City, may be adapted at The CW by Gossip Girl executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, Deadline reports. It's also likely that Amy Harris, who was a writer on the HBO series and currently writes for Gossip Girl, will handle the script adaptation.
In the novel, young Carrie Bradshaw is a high school senior in a New England town. She is on the swim team and — more importantly! -- is the last of her friends to still be a virgin. But then she catches the eye of the rakish (and no doubt good-looking) Sebastian Kydd. It'll be interesting to see if the adaptation stays true to the novel -- in which Carrie is the oldest of three girls who live with their widowed father -- or to the HBO Sex and the City adaptation, which claimed that Carrie was an only child whose dad abandoned her and her mom.
No deals have been signed yet, but it's expected that The CW's younger, female-skewing demographic makes the network the likeliest candidate to pick up the show. This month at the Television Critics Association fall previews, Sex and the City showrunner Michael Patrick King said he would not have a hand in any project related to a prequel. "I'm not working on any Sex and the City prequel at all," he said. "I haven't read Candace Bushnell's books."
"My Carrie Bradshaw started at 33 and I took her to 43 -- I don't even want to know who Carrie Bradshaw's parents are ... the idea of going backward, making her less evolved, is something that I can't even imagine doing."
