Out of their enjoyment for soap operas, two sisters raised several thousand dollars for charity.

Patti Werynski and Barbie Tsagaris hosted Daytime Divas on Saturday at Largo Community Center. More than 120 soap fans came out to see three ABC daytime stars — Bobbie Eakes, Crystal on All My Children; Kassie DePaiva, Blair on One Life to Live; and Kathy Brier, the former Marcie on One Life to Live.

Although a final figure has not been announced, Werynski estimates about $10,000 was raised to benefit My Hope Chest Foundation, a Seminole-based nonprofit organization for women in need of reconstructive surgery due to breast cancer.

This is not the first star-studded gala the sisters have coordinated.

"Our first was back in 2002 when we brought Walt Willey, Jackson Montgomery of All My Children, to the Belleview Biltmore Hotel,'' said Werynski, 58.

The two women began watching soap operas when they were girls growing up in Largo. "I remember I was real little, and while my mom and my grandmother would be watching All My Children and One Life to Live, we'd be playing with our Barbies alongside them,'' said Tsagaris, 48.

How did the women hook up with the stars?

"We used to go to the ABC Super Soap Weekends in Orlando,'' said Werynski. "Unfortunately, they stopped holding them two years ago, but that's where we started making contacts.''

For the event, with a ticket price of $100 at the door, the three soap stars arrived at 2 p.m. Along with lunch, a raffle and an auction, the celebrities put on a musical performance. Songs ranged from It's Raining Men to Brick House as well as music from Kassie DePaiva's three CDs.

After the show, the stars held a question and answer session with the audience. And no, they didn't give away any plots from their shows, said Werynski.

"It was just a fantastic event. … We are already planning on holding another one in about eight months,'' she said.
