Kyra Sedgwick has gotten an Outstanding Lead Actress Emmy nomination for the first four seasons of TNT's drama "The Closer" for her portrayal of tough Southern detective Brenda Leigh Johnson, brought in to work with the Los Angeles Police Department's Major Crimes Division.
Zap2it caught up with Sedgwick to discuss her and the show's chances in the 2010 Emmy nominations. "The Closer" has only received nominations for Sedgwick's performance -- never a nomination for the show itself. How does she react to that?
"I'd love the show to get nominated one year," she says. "I think we deserve it. It's one of the best dramas on television, and we've been overlooked in that area."
The show's producers submitted an episode called "Strike Three" in the drama series category this year. "It's actually one with [guest star] Mary McDonnell where a fellow LAPD officer has been murdered," Sedgwick says. "At the end of it we're all in our dress blues and everybody in uniform; it's a really great episode."
More thoughts from Sedgwick on the Emmys:
On her own chances at another nomination: "I'll be really sad if I don't get nominated. I'll say I'm fine, but I'll be really sad," she says with a laugh.
On what a fifth straight nomination would mean: "It's almost even more of an exciting thing when it happens year after year. It still holds a place of esteem. For me, I'm always so thrilled to get the call. It's just as exciting every time, it's always a surprise. It's never an expectation on my part."
Her other Emmy picks: "I love Edie Falco. I think she's an extraordinary actress and I love 'Nurse Jackie.' So I would hope that would be nominated and that she would get a nomination for that.
"There's so many people that I admire right now that are working in television. ... I really like ['Dexter's'] Michael C. Hall. I think 'Treme' is a really good new show too."
"The Closer" begins its new season on July 12. Look for more from Sedgwick about Season 6 as the premiere approaches.
