Vivica A. Fox has a string of projects stretching into next year and they couldn't be any more different from one another.
This winter, she's starring in a Hallmark Channel Christmas movie called "Farewell Mr. Kringle." Next year, she's voicing one of the characters in Cartoon Channel's "Scooby Doo" remake. She's also producing a stage play in which she'll costar with singer Brian McKnight. And this Sunday (June 20), she's guest starring on Lifetime's "Drop Dead Diva." Fox, who is typically considered a film actress, says that today's Hollywood makes it easier to do diverse projects.
"I'm so glad that the business has changed so that you can do a little bit of everything nowadays," Fox tells Zap2it. "Now, you can do movies. You can do television. You can do the stage. You can be a spokeswoman. I'm glad that there's versatility out there to do you nowadays. You don't have to limit yourself."
When it comes to TV, she believes cable television has improved the roles available to actresses.
"In cable television, the roles are more fun for women to play. Look at Glenn Close ['Damages'] and [Mary Louise Parker in] 'Weeds' and things of that nature where maybe women in their forties or older just couldn't get in movies and stuff like that."
Fox's upcoming role in "Drop Dead Diva" is a good example of one of those roles. She plays Maria Ellis, a woman who hires Jane (Brooke Elliot) for her divorce lawyer. Straightforward, right? Well, there's a twist.
"She finds out that her husband is living a double life with his no good lying self," Fox says. "She finds out that he has a whole other family going on. And her and this lady meet each other. And, they team up together, all right girl power! So, instead of giving him an easy way out, they say, 'No, we're going to sue you for fraud. We're going to totally expose this guy.'"
And as if the "Big Love" twist isn't enough, Fox adds, "And also in doing that, there's another surprise ending, as well."
While Fox says she has never suffered a break up quite like that, she understands how it could happen.
"You can find out that you love someone so much that you would think the relationship is going one way and then you find out, 'Wow, OK, I didn't see that coming,'" she explains. "Sometimes, love can blindside you."
"Drop Dead Diva" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on Lifetime.
