Dozens of items fill the office of Profiles in History, which will auction off thousands of Lost props Saturday and Sunday online at profilesinhistory.com, by phone, mail, fax or in person at a Santa Monica airport hangar.
Profiles president Joseph Maddalena, whose company specializes in auctions of Hollywood memorabilia, says interest in the Lost collection is the biggest he's ever seen. "The fan interest is off the charts. Right now, we have people bidding in 32 countries" for items from the show, which ended its six-season run in May.
Of the auction, he says, "It's huge, and I confess I've gone through the entire online catalog. It's a bit of a trip down memory lane."
Maddalena hopes to raise more than $1 million, with proceeds going to ABC Studios and various charities. Bidding for many items starts at $200.
Boxes of memorabilia are arriving every day from the Hawaii set. Items include Oceanic plane wreckage and seats; Hurley's Camaro; Vincent the dog's collar and leash; Virgin Mary statuettes; Jack's passports; Sawyer's letter to the man who caused his parents' death; Charlie's DS ring; Daniel Faraday's journal; a nuclear bomb core; Dharma submarine conning tower and deck; Locke's wheelchair; and a pilot script signed by co-creators J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof.
"Here's TNT from the Black Rock," Maddalena says during a tour of the Lost treasures, "with pieces of Arzt on it." Leslie Arzt was a Flight 815 survivor blown to bits while handling dynamite from the old ship. "I think that's a pretty cool prop," says Daniel Roebuck, who played Arzt. "They put (pieces of Arzt) in a cannon and shot me up in the air and it rained down on everybody."
Hurley's Dharma van (starting bid: $8,000) sits in the parking lot. "This is where Sayid was dying," Maddalena says. "You can see the studio blood."
Lost retains its hold on many, says Emerson, whose one keepsake is a linen suit that ultimately wasn't used for a beach scene.
"I thought, 'Well, when do I start to let go of it? When does the Lost world begin to fade away?' But that process hasn't begun yet. I'm doing as much press now as I think I ever have done."
And, he says, the auction "bodes well for future Lost conventions. You're going to have all these people walking around in genuine Jack clothing or genuine Dharma jumpsuits."
