{alltv} 'Lost Girl' based on real folklore

Ksenia Solo says one of the best things about Lost Girl is that it could be real.

What? With all those creatures? Good lord, we hope not.

To be fair, Solo merely is pointing out that Lost Girl - a new Canadian fantasy series that debuts Sunday, Sept. 12 on Showcase - has its roots in existing folklore.

"Going into Lost Girl was so exciting because it's so much fun when you have all these different characters, all these creatures," said Solo, 22. "Our show is based so much on real folklore, and that's the coolest thing about it, because, oh my God, this stuff could be real, or maybe has been real.

"Maybe these creatures do exist. So it's like aliens to me. I'm fascinated by aliens, too. Do they exist? Don't they exist? So it's kind of in the same worlds."

Lost Girl centres on supernatural seductress Bo (Anna Silk), a Succubus who feeds on the sexual energy of humans. Bo grew up with human parents, so it isn't until she interacts with the mythological Fae that she begins to grasp just what she is.

The Fae hierarchy is not thrilled that Bo has existed under their noses. Helping Bo navigate this dangerous territory is Kenzi (Solo), a circumstantial human acquaintance who becomes a trusted friend.

"Bo and Kenzi have a very special thing bonding them, and I think there's a side of adrenalin for Kenzi, too," said Solo, a Gemini Award-winning actress who has been in show business since she was a kid, notably with roles on I Was a Sixth Grade Alien and Renegadepress.com.

"Kenzi is amazing because she's so fearless. For anybody else, if they saw Bo and what she did, they would run to the moon. I know I would. But not Kenzi.

"This also is an amazing business opportunity for Kenzi, being a thief and a smart-ass. The stars kind of align for her with this relationship and this situation."

The stars appear to be aligning for Solo, too, as she looks toward the future.

Solo has a couple of films coming out: Black Swan with Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis; and The Factory with John Cusack and Jennifer Carpenter. And Solo's character Natasha on the CW series Life Unexpected returns for the second season, starting in the fourth episode of the new campaign.

But we definitely can see comedy in Solo's future. Lost Girl allows her to dabble in that genre.

Just to be clear, Lost Girl is not a comedy. But there are funny bits. And most of them come courtesy of Solo, who has an attribute and a skill for which many comedic actresses would kill: Her eyes dance.

"Oh my God, I love you, thank you - 'my eyes dance' - I think that's one of the coolest things anyone has ever said to me," Solo said.

"This is really my first time being the comedic relief of a show. I've done so much serious drama in my career, and I always had dreamed of doing comedy.

"I'm slowly getting into the groove of wanting to do comedy always. So to get a role like Kenzi is so magical, because she's just so friggin' awesome!"

Just keep your dancing eyes peeled for all those creatures, Ksenia. As you say, they could be real.
