According to executive producer Lisa Kudrow, there's more than one reason to watch Who Do You Think You Are?
First, you might be a fan of the particular celebrity investigating his or her family tree. For the second-season premiere of the U.S. version of Who Do You Think You Are? - which airs Friday on NBC and Citytv - that celebrity is Vanessa Williams.
But celebs aside, Who Do You Think You Are? can be interesting viewing for history buffs of all stripes.
"It has very little to do with who this person is here and now, because they're almost immediately stepping back in time," said Kudrow, who is best known for playing the ditzy Phoebe on Friends. "They're focusing on the lives of their ancestors who have long since passed.
"You get to learn about what historical or sociological events shaped that family tree, and may have had the same effect on yours. Every episode has at least two moments that I think are fascinating. When you personalize history, it has so much more impact."
In the case of Williams, the search leads her to South Carolina, where she finds ancestral ties to the Civil War's Union Army.
"(The show) works out best when it's someone like Vanessa, who is intellectually curious and genuinely interested - not judging the information, just taking it in," Kudrow said.
In addition to Williams, the eight-episode second season features Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim McGraw, Rosie O'Donnell, Steve Buscemi, Kim Cattrall, Lionel Richie and Ashley Judd.
