NBC says a TMZ report claiming that Today anchor Matt Lauer is seeking a raise to $25 million a year is "completely untrue."
"We've heard a lot of rumors and speculation this week, and prefer not to comment, but this one is the most absurd," a Today rep said in a statement. "It's completely untrue."
On Friday, TMZ said that Lauer doesn't want to leave Today after his contract expires in 2012 — as had been reported earlier this week — and was using the buzz as a "well-timed negotiating ploy." He currently earns $17 million annually.
Reports of Lauer's possible departure came a day after news broke that co-anchor Meredith Vieira is expected to leave Today when her contract expires in September.
Lauer has been on Today since 1997, working alongside Katie Couric — who's reportedly leaving CBS Evening News this year — and Vieira.
