Just because Lauren Alaina went home this weekend doesn't mean she got to sleep in her own bed. Instead, the American Idol finalist caught a few hours in an area hotel room before getting started on her busy Saturday schedule.
Though Lauren's from Rossville, Ga., she spent much of her visit in nearby Chattanooga, Tenn. A crowd of well-wishers greeted her Friday night at the city's Metropolitan Airport Friday night, and she spoke about the tornadoes that hit the area last month.
"I can't believe that happened in my hometown," she said, "but I am so glad that this weekend is my weekend because everyone's been really upset and I just hope they can have one day away from all of this sadness and be happy and to celebrate."
On Saturday, she surveyed first-hand some of the damage caused by the storms, visiting a shelter at a Baptist church in Ringold, Ga. She also visited an AT&T Superstore.
During her homecoming performance at Coolidge Park, Lauren sang Martina McBride's Anyway and Carrie Underwood's Flat on the Floor for about 10,000 fans. She also learned that the judges picked Lee Ann Womack's I Hope You Dance for her to sing Wednesday.
Later, Lauren visited her high school and threw out the first pitch for Saturday's Chattanooga Lookouts/Tennessee Smokies game, which the Lookouts won 9-1 before a sell-out crowd of 6,287. She also sang God Bless America.

BTW, here's a look into the effort that goes into setting up these hometown visits on the spur of the moment.
