Emmy season is in full swing! Over the next week, Emmy voters will be checking off names and shows they think are worthy of getting a nomination come July 14. We here at TVGuide.com have a few picks in mind ourselves. Next up: our dream ballot for Best Comedy Series:
Community
Silly and kooky one minute, sweet and charming the next, Community is arguably one of the most imaginative comedies on the air. Its reference- and subtext-laced humor might be too niche for some, but you can't deny that it always manages to reinvent even the most tired of sitcom tropes. The show didn't receive a single nomination last year. It's time to right that wrong.
Cougar Town
What was once a Courteney Cox vehicle is now a formidable ensemble show that lets every player shine in their own zany, wine-drinking, Penny Can-playing way. It's easy to subscribe to the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" adage, but it's a different beast altogether to realize something — while not necessarily broken — could be better and spin it into comedy gold.
Louie
The under-the-radar series, based loosely on Louis C.K.'s life, isn't by any means a feel-good show, but it's well-observed, witty and raw in capturing its star's increasingly cynical misadventures. The vignette structure, featuring segments of C.K.'s stand-up gigs, might be tough to click with viewers, let alone voters, but the show deserves to catch on.
The Middle
Modern Family has gotten all the buzz and glory the last two years, but The Middle is a stealth hit that paints perhaps an even more realistic portrait of a family. On the surface, it seems plain and un-edgy, but it's equally as wry and endearing — and it's about time to it gets its share of the spotlight.
Modern Family
There was no sophomore slump for the comedy, as it continued to prove that one needs not to rely on stunts, big-name guest stars and cliff-hangers to deliver quality content and side-splitting laughs week in and week out. Plus, it's the reigning champ — and ABC's first win in the category in 22 years — so it's hard to bet against this clan.
Parks and Recreation
We'll go out on a limb and say Parks and Rec is NBC's best comedy right now, if not the best on TV. With the additions of Adam Scott and Rob Lowe, the show really hit its stride this year, offering up clever, uproarious and emotionally rich slices of small-town bureaucracy, not to mention, Li'l Sebastian. The multi-episode arc devoted to the Harvest Festival alone is enough to score a win (should it get nominated, of course).
