Keith Olbermann has spent the last five months on the sideline between his MSNBC show and the one he'll start next week on Al Gore's Current cable channel.
But he's not all frustrated by the lack of a platform: "People sort of assume that I've sat at home with my knuckles in my mouth," he said in an interview. "People are saying 'You missed all the Sarah Palin (mangling the story of) Paul Revere. It's like, yeah, that's going to be the last time she gets something wrong about American history.
"Or," they tell him, "'You missed Anthony Weiner! The whole thing will have played out by the time you get on the air.' Well, maybe it won't; if he's not resigning it's going to unfortunately for him be there whether he likes it or not. And if it isn't him, there'll be another one; there's always another one."
The outspoken commentator, 52, says Weiner's "stupidity," like so many other scandal-plagued politicians, was his sense of infallibility: "You have evidence that you can present to yourself that you're different, that you're invincible or immortal."
But Olbermann is sympathetic to the Democratic congressman, (who is shown partially nude in Congressional gym photos surfacing today): "He's a dedicated public servant, and I am very saddened with the rapidity with which and almost the enthusiasm with which many are willing to throw him under the train. The faster you are to acknowledge your own stupidity the more you can survive it; and I've done many stupid things, and sometimes it's taken me years to acknowledge them."
