BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - There's "good crazy" and "bad crazy", and the second kind really shouldn't occur when your stern British boss is in the room.
That was the case for 84-year-old Cloris Leachman during the session for the new Fox series Raising Hope at the Television Critics Association tour.
Leachman basically hijacked the session, forcing an impromptu switching of seats among her cast-mates, ridiculing reporters asking questions, and essentially making herself the centre of attention.
It may sound amusing, but actually it was uncomfortable. The one time Leachman got a legitimate laugh was when she joked that she is "so sick of Betty White."
While all this was going on, Fox chairman Peter Rice was standing at the back of the room at the Beverly Hilton, arms crossed, looking less than amused.
The thing is, Leachman actually has a tiny part in Raising Hope, playing a grandmother who slips in and out of lucidity, ha ha. It's not as if Leachman couldn't be replaced easily, ya know?
Following the session, Leachman seemed more "with it." When asked why she had turned the session into a bizarre form of performance art, she said, "That's all I know how to do."
Later that evening at the Fox party at the Santa Monica Pier, Leachman was spotted bouncing up and down on a strap-in, reverse-bungee-jumping apparatus, primarily designed for kids. Eep.
