Everyone is familiar with the expression, "Be careful what you wish for."
But there are occasions when you wish for exactly the right thing, and then it comes true. Kari Matchett of Covert Affairs has the personal proof.
"I was driving in Los Angeles, I had been here for just over four years, and I was thinking, 'I'd love to spend more time in Canada, I miss Toronto,' " the Canadian actress said.
"And I thought, 'You know what would be perfect? It would be perfect if I could do an American series that's shot in Toronto, and I could spend about half the year in Toronto and half the year in L.A.'
"Literally a week later, I got a call."
Matchett's Canadian connections will finally allow her to see her wish fulfilled when Covert Affairs makes its Canadian debut, Sunday, Jan. 9 on Showcase. The first season of Covert Affairs aired last summer on the USA Network, which is not available legally north of the border.
"I'm thrilled, since all my family, except for my sister, is in Canada," said Matchett, whose previous TV credits include Invasion, 24 and Crash. "And I have a load of friends in Canada, too, since I lived there most of my life.
"So it's nice now that they actually think I'm doing a show that exists. I don't think they were sure. Not many people in Canada ever have heard of the USA Network, so I'm glad I can justify my own existence."
Covert Affairs certainly has justified its existence, as a second season already has been ordered. And series lead Piper Perabo was nominated for a Golden Globe award.
Perabo plays Annie Walker, a CIA trainee who unexpectedly is promoted to field operative for reasons that are half obvious and half mysterious. Matchett plays Joan Campbell, Annie's immediate superior.
Covert Affairs also stars Christopher Gorham, Peter Gallagher, Anne Dudek and Sendhil Ramamurthy.
Often on TV when there's a female boss, that automatically translates to bitchy. Joan mostly shows her cold side in the early episodes, but Matchett was conscious of expanding on that.
"The writers and creators certainly are interested in having multi-dimensional characters, and that's a phrase I used with them often from the beginning," Matchett said. "Sometimes a woman boss, or any boss, has to be strong and has to be clear, and that can be misinterpreted as being a bitch.
"But as the first season goes on, Joan has more layers and other dimensions coming in. One of the things that helps with that is having her marriage (to Peter Gallagher's character) intertwining with her professional life."
Overall, there is a lightness to Covert Affairs. In fact, Joan probably is the most serious character on the show.
"I'm dying to do a comedy, that is true," Matchett said with a laugh. "My dream is to work with either Will Ferrell or Bill Murray."
Well, Kari, you seem to have a handle on wish fulfilment, so go ahead and wish for more stuff.
"It may work for me again in the future," Matchett said. "Someday when you're getting onto the freeway, you should try it, too."
