A trio of shows NBC picked up last spring probably won't see the light of day until at least this spring, if they make it to the air at all.
We've discussed the possible fate of comedy "Friends With Benefits" -- whose male lead, Ryan Hansen, has just taken a role in another NBC pilot -- and it's probably not good. The same probably applies to two more comedies, the rom-com anthology "Love Bites" and the "Curb Your Enthusiasm"-esque "The Paul Reiser Show."
The recent regime change at NBC, coupled with less-than-confident backing from the previous people in charge, has left all three shows in limbo. According to Vulture, it's unlikely that any of the three will get significant airtime before the season ends in late May. And since the networks announce their 2011-12 lineups about a week before that, it's really unlikely that any of the three will stick around for next season.
"Love Bites" actually had a lineup spot at one point: When NBC announced its lineup at last May's upfronts, the show was scheduled to air at 10 p.m. Thursdays. Then executive producer Cindy Chupack decided to step away from the show, the network parted ways with actress Jordana Spiro over the uncertain future of her other show, TBS' "My Boys" (since canceled), and star Becki Newton -- whose character in the pilot is a virgin -- became pregnant. All of that led NBC to push the show back to "midseason," but so far it hasn't aired.
Now Newton is being courted for several pilots, and two other regulars, Greg Grunberg and Constance Zimmer, have taken parts in projects at A&E and CBS.
All that still puts "Love Bites" a half-step ahead of "Friends With Benefits" and "The Paul Reiser Show," which were announced last May but pretty well disappeared after that.
Vulture also notes that new NBC chief Robert Greenblatt isn't overly psyched about the three shows' prospects (though apparently neither were the previous bosses). All those signs point to summer Burnoff Theater for the three shows.
